COSHH Assessment — Expanding Foam (MDI-Based Polyurethane)

This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers one-component polyurethane expanding foam based on methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) — used in construction, insulation and DIY for gap-filling, sealing and bonding.

What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?

The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:

  • Substance identification — trade name, chemical name (MDI-based polyurethane), SDS reference and physical state
  • Health effects and first aid — inhalation, ingestion, skin contact and eye contact, with specific first aid for each route
  • Respiratory sensitisation hazard — MDI isocyanate is a respiratory sensitiser; exposure can cause occupational asthma which may be permanent; LEV or RPE required
  • Workplace exposure limits — MDI TWA and STEL with units, from workplace exposure limits guidance
  • CLP hazard classification — Irritant, Environmental and Long-term health hazard pictograms
  • PPE requirements — including respirator with organic vapour/P2 filter, nitrile gloves and eye protection
  • Emergency procedures — spillage (cured foam removal) and fire response

Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?

This assessment is suitable for any workplace where expanding foam is used, including:

  • Construction and building contractors
  • Insulation installers and energy efficiency contractors
  • Plumbing and heating engineers
  • Facilities maintenance teams
  • DIY and home improvement operations
